Aluminum pipe is typically measured by its nominal pipe size, which is based on the inside diameter (ID), and its wall thickness which is referred to by its schedule. Wall thickness also determines the strength of the pipe. Schedule 40 is the most common.

Tubing vs Pipe. What's the Difference?

6061 / 6061-T6 Aluminum

Alloy 6061 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy. It is known for its excellent strength and corrosion resistance. Alloy 6061 is a more machinable aluminum and is the workhorse of heat-treated alloys. It is often used in various structural and fabrication applications. It is worth noting that long-term exposure to outside elements without painting or applying a clear coat finish will result in the material oxidizing (developing a white chalky surface).

Alloy 6061-T6 is a temper condition indicating that it has been heat-treated and artificially aged, which increases the strength of the material. The "-T6" temper provides improved mechanical properties, including higher tensile strength and hardness. It maintains good corrosion resistance and retains its formability. This temper is commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and structural applications.

6063 / 6063-T6 Aluminum

Alloy 6063 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy. It is a softer, more formable aluminum. Alloy 6063 offers good corrosion resistance. It is often used in architectural and structural applications. It is especially great in projects where the primary concern is for the final product to be lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

Alloy 6063-T6 is a temper condition indicating that it has been solution heat-treated and artificially aged after extrusion. The "-T6" temper provides the highest mechanical properties among these temper conditions. It retains good formability and corrosion resistance but offers increased strength. This temper is used in applications where high strength is critical.
