Aluminum rectangular bar, also known as “flat bar stock” or “bar stock”, is popular for all types of fabrication projects when light weight and corrosion resistance is needed. Rectangle bar is an extruded aluminum bar with square corners. The 6061 alloy is a harder, more machinable aluminum and is available in bars up to 3" thick. The 6063 alloy is a softer, more formable aluminum and is available in bars under 1/2" thick. Aluminum 6061 & 6063 Alloy Characteristics, Applications & Finishes

6061 / 6061-T6511 Aluminum

Alloy 6061 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy. It is known for its excellent strength and corrosion resistance. Alloy 6061 is a more machinable aluminum and is the workhorse of heat-treated alloys. It is often used in various structural and fabrication applications. It is worth noting that long-term exposure to outside elements without painting or applying a clear coat finish will result in the material oxidizing (developing a white chalky surface).

Alloy 6061-T6511 is essentially the same as 6061-T651. The "T6511" designation is often used to indicate that the material meets specific industry standards for flatness and straightness. For extruded rod and bar shapes, the T6511 temper is also stress-relieved, but an applied straightening process ensures the bar is as straight as possible after extruding. Like 6061-T651, it offers high mechanical strength, stress corrosion resistance, and formability. It is commonly used in applications where precise flatness and straightness are required, such as in precision machinery and equipment.

6063 / 6063-T5 Aluminum

Alloy 6063 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy. It is a softer, more formable aluminum. Alloy 6063 offers good corrosion resistance. It is often used in architectural and structural applications. It is especially great in projects where the primary concern is for the final product to be lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

Alloy 6063-T5 is a temper condition indicating that it has been artificially aged after extrusion. The "-T5" temper provides improved mechanical properties compared to the as-extruded condition. It retains its excellent formability and corrosion resistance. This temper is commonly used in architectural and structural applications. Alloy 6063-T5 has been artificially aged for improved mechanical properties while retaining formability.
