Deburred Metal Edges: What to Expect from Cut2SizeMetals

When you order from Cut2SizeMetals, you get more than just custom-cut metal. In many cases, we include edge preparation to remove sharp burrs and create smoother, safer edges. But not every job or material requires it—and not all parts are deburred by default.

We’re sharing this guide to help you understand when deburring is included, when it’s not, and how to request it if it’s important to your project.

When edge prep matters, we go the extra step—here’s what that means for you

Edge quality can make a big difference in how your material performs. Sharp burrs left from cutting can pose safety risks, damage nearby surfaces, or slow down your workflow. That’s why, when appropriate, we take the extra step to clean up edges—especially on smaller, made-to-order jobs involving sheet, plate, bar, or rod.

However, high-volume or industrial jobs—like hundreds of pipe cuts—deburring may not be included unless specifically requested. These parts are often intended for raw or structural use, where cosmetic finishing isn’t required.

What is deburring?

Deburring is the process of removing small metal fragments and sharp edges—called burrs—that form along the edges when metal is cut. These burrs may be barely visible, but they can make handling difficult and may interfere with fit or finish.

When a job calls for edge smoothing, we use a mix of shop-grade tools—including hand deburring tools, soft wheel buffers, and Dyna files—to clean up edges quickly and efficiently (as shown in the images below). The method depends on the material, cut type, and order volume.

Do you deburr all edges?

The short answer: it depends on the job.

On many smaller, made-to-order jobs—particularly for sheet, plate, bar, or rod—we take time to deburr not just the cut edges, but often the factory (mill) edges as well. However, not every part requires edge finishing, and in high-volume or industrial applications (like dozens of pipe cuts), deburring may not be included unless specifically requested.

We aim to strike the right balance between safety, efficiency, and end-use expectations. If edge finish is critical to your application, please let us know before ordering. We’re happy to confirm what’s possible and provide a quote if needed.

Note: Even when edges are deburred, we recommend wearing gloves and using caution—especially with thin-gauge or heavy materials.

Need custom edge finishing?

If your project requires something beyond standard deburring, we offer custom metal edge services:

  • Mitered edges – Available upon request and quoted separately. Typically done via laser or waterjet and require a spec sheet or drawing.
  • Beveled edges – Not currently offered.
  • Other custom edge finishes – If you have a unique requirement, our team is happy to discuss it.
