Rounded Metal Corners: Knock-Off vs. Radius Options for Sheet and Plate Orders

We’re often asked if we can round the corners of custom-cut metal sheet or plate orders. The short answer is yes—but there’s more to it than a simple “yes or no.” Here’s what to know about knock-off corners vs. radius corners, and when each method makes sense for your custom metal fabrication project.

Start with clean, square corners

At Cut2SizeMetals, all sheet and plate orders ship with clean, square 90-degree corners. If your project requires fully rounded corners—for safety, appearance, or a finished look—there are two ways we can help: knock-off corners or precision-cut radius corners.

The right method depends on your material type, thickness, and surface finish.

Two options for rounding metal corners

We offer two methods for rounding metal corners:

  • Knock-Off Corners – a quick, manual option done by hand
  • Radius Corners – a precision method using laser or waterjet cutting

Let’s look at the pros, cons, and best-use cases for each.

Knock-Off Corner
Fast, hand-shaped round to remove the tip—quick safety/fit fix; hand-done, variation expected.

Radius Corner
Clean, uniform arc to a specified size (e.g., R0.25") for a finished, repeatable look.

Knock-off corners (Sheets only)

If you just need to remove the sharp edge of a corner, we can manually grind or sand it down. This process is done by hand—so the corners won’t match exactly—and it’s typically only available for sheet, not plate.

What to know:

  • Quick and functional, but not precise
  • May scratch or dull surrounding finish
  • Not recommended for polished surfaces (#4 or #8 finish)
  • Typically provided at no extra cost, but subject to confirmation when ordering
  • Must be requested by phone

This is a good option when appearance doesn’t matter—like internal parts or low-visibility panels.

Tip: For polished stainless steel (#4 or #8 finishes), we strongly recommend skipping this method. Grinding will damage the surface.

Radius corners (Sheet or plate)

For clean, uniform, and matching corners, we offer radius cutting using laser or waterjet technology. This is a paid service that delivers consistent results—ideal for both sheets and plates.

In fact, plate orders almost always require radius cutting, because the thickness makes hand-grinding corners impractical or unsafe.

Why choose radius corners?

  • Exact and repeatable results
  • Protects surface finishes like #4 brushed or #8 mirror
  • Compatible with sheet and plate
  • Custom radius sizes available
  • Quoted based on material, thickness, and radius

If you're ordering polished stainless steel—or working on a project where appearance and accuracy matter—this is the method we recommend.
