In simple terms, the higher the ounce number, the thicker and heavier the copper sheet. For example, 16 oz copper sheet has a decimal thickness of approximately .0216" and may also be described as 22 mil or 24 gauge copper sheet.

Copper plate is the thicker flat form of Alloy 110 copper. What to expect from copper mill finish
Copper sheet and plate come in a mill finish, which means the material comes to us as it was finished at the mill. Mill finish copper is practical and widely used, but it is not a polished or cosmetic show finish.
Mill finish copper is a standard, as-produced industrial surface, not a cosmetic show finish. Because copper is prone to oxidation, the material may already show discoloration or a dull, matte appearance upon arrival. Light scratches or surface variations are normal. Copper will continue to patina when exposed to natural elements.
Copper will also change appearance over time. When exposed to natural elements, copper can patina and develop greenish or bluish hues. Some customers choose copper specifically because of this natural aging process, while others may need to plan for cleaning, sealing, or finishing depending on the application.
The timing and final color of copper patina depend on exposure, moisture, environment, and handling, so natural weathering can vary from project to project.
